Intended learning outcomes

Upon approval, the student should be able to:

  1. Characterize the fossil and renewable resources for the chemical industry, their use and limitations in a sustainable perspective.
  2. Identify and describe the main chemical/biological processes related to the crude oil, natural gas and coal processing industries and downstream petrochemical industries and integrated biorefineries.
  3. Understand and describe the main (bio)synthetic routes and industrial processes leading to chemical and biologic products.
  4. Understand the need for the development of greener and integrated chemical and/or biological processes as part of the tools to drive sustainability through innovation.
  5. Identify and understand most common environmental, health and safety issues when considering industrial processes and evaluate alternative materials and processes based on green engineering principles and metrics.
